“Di antara orang-orang Mu’min itu terdapat sejumlah laki-laki yang memenuhi janji-janji mereka terhadap Allah. Di antara mereka ada yang memberikan nyawanya, sebagian yang lain sedang menunggu gilirannya. Dan tak pernah mereka merubah pendiriannya sedikit pun juga … ! “
Setelah Rasulullah saw. membacakan ayat yang mulia ini, beliau menatap wajah para shahabatnya sambil menunjuk kepadaThalhah sabdanya: “Siapa yang suka melihat seorang laki-laki yang masih berjalan di muka bumi, padahal ia telah memberikan nyawanya, maka hendaklah ia memandang Thalhah …Tak ada satu kegembiraan yang paling didambakan oleh shahabat Rasul, di mana hati mereka terbang merindukannya, melebihi kedudukan seperti yang disandangkan Rasul kepada Thalhah bin Ubaiaillah ini!
Karena itu, tidak heran bila Thalhah hatinya tenteram mendengar akhir hayatnya serta kesudahan nasibnya dalam hidup ini . . . . Ia akan hidup dan mati dan termasuk salah seorang dari mereka yang menepati benar apa, yang telah mereka janjikan kepada Allah, dan ia tak terkena fitnah dan tidak mendapat kesukaran …. la telah digembirakan Rasul akan beroleh surga. Nah, bagaimanakah riwayat kehidupannya, orang yang telah diramalkan akan berbahagia itu …. ?
Dalam perjalanannya berniaga ke kota Bashra, Thalhah sempat berjumpa dengan seorang pendeta yang amat baik. Di waktu itu sang pendeta memberi tahu padanya, bahwa Nabi yang akan muncul di tanah Haram, sebagaimana telah diramalkan oleh para Nabi yang shaleh, masanya telah datang menampakkan diri . . . . Diperingatkannya Thalhah agar tidak ketinggalan menyertai kafilah kerasulan itu, yaitu kafilah pembawa petunjuk rahmat dan pembebasaan ….
Dan sewaktu Thalhah tiba kembali di negerinya Mekah sesudah berbulan-bulan dihabiskannya di Bashra dan dalam perjalanan, ia menangkap bisik-bisik penduduk . .. dan mendengar percakapan tentang “Muhammad al-Amin” . . . dan tentang wahyu yang datang kepadanya . . . begitu pun tentang kerasulan yang dibawanya kepada seluruh ummat manusia . . . .Orang yang mula-mula ditanyakan Thalhah ialah Abu Bakar.Maka diketahuinyalah bahwa ia baru saja pulang dengan kafilah beserta barang perniagaannya, dan bahwa ia berdiri di samping Muhammad saw. selaku Mu’min, sebagai pembela yang menyerahkan dirinya kepada Tuhan.
Thalhah berbicara kepada dirinya sendiri: ‘Muhammad saw. dan Abu Bakar?
Demi Allah, tak mungkin kedua orang ini akan bersekongkol dalam kesesatan kapan pun!”Muhammad saw. telah mencapai usia 40 tahun. Kita belum pernah mengenal kebohongannya sekalipun dalam jangka usianya yang sekian lama itu …. Apakah mungkin ia berdusta hari ini terhadap Allah, . . .. lalu mengatakan bahwa Tuhan telah mengutusnya dan mengirimkan wahyu kepadanya . . . ?
Suatu hal yang tidak masuk akal … !
Thalhah mempercepat langkahnya menuju rumah Abu Bakar. Tak berlangsung lama pembicaraan di antara keduanya, maka rindunya hendak menemui Rasulullah saw. dan hasratnya hendak berjanji setia kepadanya serasa semakin cepat dari debar jantungnya sendiri . . . .
Ia ditemani Abu Bakar pergi kepada Rasulullah saw. di mana ia menyatakan keislamannya dan mengambil tempat dalam kafilah yang diberkati ini … dari angkatan pertama. Begitulah Thalhah termasuk orang yang memeluk Islam pada angkatan terdahuluSekalipun ia orang yang terpandang dalam kaumnya, dan seorang hartawan besar dengan perniagaannya yang selalu meningkat, namun ia tidak luput menderitakan penganiayaan dari orang-orang Quraisy karena Islam.
Untunglah ia dan Abu Bakar mendapat perlindungan dari Naufal bin Khuwailia, si Singa Quraisy paman Khadijah istri Rasul …. Sehingga penganiayaan terhadap keduanya tidak berlangsung lama, karena orang-orang musyrik Quraisy merasa Segan kepadanya serta takut pula akan akibat perbuatan mereka . . . .Thalhah hijrah ke Madinah sewaktu orang-orang Islam diperintahkan hijrah.
Kemudian ia selalu menyaksikan semua peperangan bersama Rasulullah saw. kecuali perang Badar, karena waktu itu, Rasul mengutusnya bersama Sa’ia bin Zaia untuk suatu keperluan penting keluar kota Madinah ….Sewaktu keduanya telah menyelesaikan tugas mereka dengan baik, dan kembali ke Madinah, kebetulan Nabi dengan para shahabatnya yang lain sedang kembali pula dari perang Badar.
Alangkah sedih dan perih perasaan keduanya kehilangan pahala karena tidak menyertai Rasulullah saw. berjihad dalam peperangan yang pertama itu.Tetapi Rasul telah menenteramkan hati mereka hingga tenang dan mantap dengan memberitahukan bahwa mereka tetap memperoleh pahala dan ganjaran yang sama seperti orang-orang yang berperang. Bahkan Rasul membagikan rampasan perang kepada keduanya tidak kurang dari yang didapat oleh mereka yang menyertainya ….
Sekarang datanglah masa perang Uhud yang akan memperlihatkan segala kebengisan dan kekejaman Quraisy, yang tampil hendak membalas dendam atas kekalahannya di perang Badar dan untuk mengamankan tujuan terakhirnya dengan menimpakan kekalahan yang menentukan atas Muslimin yang menurut. perkiraan mereka suatu soal mudah dan pasti dapat terlaksana … !
Peperangan dahsyat pun berlangsunglah dan korban-korban yang berjatuhan segera menutupi muka bumi …serta kekalahan tampak berada di fihak kaum musyrikin ….
Kemudian sewaktu Kaum Muslimin melihat musuh mengundurkan diri, mereka sama meletakkan senjata, dan para pemanah turun meninggalkan kedudukan mereka, pergi memperebutkan harta rampasan …. Tiba-tiba sewaktu mereka lengah pasukan Quraisy menyerang kembali dari belakang hingga berhasil merebut prakarsa dan menguasai kendali pertempuran ….Sekarang peperangan mulai berkecamuk lagi dengan segala kekejaman dan kedahsyatannya.
Serangan mendadak yang tiba-tiba itu, rupanya telah mengkucar-kacirkan barisan Kaum Muslimin . . . . Thalhah memperhatikan daerah peperangan tempat Rasulullah saw. berdiri.Dilihatnya Rasulullah menjadi sasaran empuk serbuan pasukan penyembah berhala dan musyrik, maka ia pun dengan cepat segera ke arah Rasul ….
Thalhah r.a. terus maju menebas jalan yang walaupun pendek tetapi terasa panjang setiap jengkal jalan dihadang puluhan pedang yang bersilang dan tombak-tombak yang mencari mangsanya….Dari jauh dilihatnya Rasulullah saw. bercucuran darah dari pipinya, sedang beliau menahan kesakitan yang amat sangat.
Ia naik pitam dan berang, lalu diambilnya jalan pintas, dengan satu atau dua lompatan dahsyat dari kudanya, dan benarlah .. . di hadapan Rasul sekarang ia menemukan apa yang ditakutinya . . . pedang-pedang musyrikin menyambar-nyambar ke arah Rasul, mengepung dan hendak membinasakannya ….Bagaikan satu peleton tentara jua, Thalhah berdiri kukuh, dan mengayunkan pedangnya yang ampuh ke kiri dan ke kanan.
Ia dapat melihat darah Rasul yang mulia menetes dan mendengar rintihan kesakitannya. Maka diraihnya Nabi dengan tangan kiri dari lobang tempat kakinya terperosok. Sambil memapah Rasul yang mulia dengan dekapan tangan kiri ke dadanya, ia mengundurkan diri ke tempat yang aman, sementara tangan kanannya , Allah memberkati tangan kanannya mengayun-ayunkan pedangnya bagaikan kilat menusuk dan menyabet orang-orang musyrik yang hendak mengerumuni Rasul bagaikan belalang memenuhi medan pertempuran ….
Marilah kita dengarkan Abu Bakar Shiadiq r.a. menggambarkan keadaan medan tempur kala itu:
Kata Aisyah: Bila disebutkan perang Uhud, maka Abu Bakar selalu berkata: “Itu semuanya adalah hari Thalhah . . . ! Aku adalah orang yang mula-mula mendapatkan Nabi saw., maka berkatalah Rasul kepadaku dan kepada Abu Ubaidah ibnul Jarrah: “Tolonglah saudaramu itu . . . . (Thalhah)!”
Kami lalu menengoknya, dan ternyata pada sekujur tubuhnya terdapat lebih dari tujuh puluh luka berupa tusukan tombak, sobekan pedang dan tancapan panah, dan ternyata pula anak jarinya putus . . . maka kami segera merawatnya dengan baik”.
Di semua medan tempur dan peperangan Thalhah selalu berada di barisan terdepan mencari keridaan Allah dan membela bendera Rasulnya. Thalhah hidup di tengah-tengah jama’ah Muslimin, mengabdi kepada Allah bersama mereka yang beribadat,dan berjihad pada jalan-Nye bersama mujahidin yang lain. Dengan tangannya dikukuhkanlah bersama kawan-kawan yang lain tiang-tiang Agama yang baru ini, Agama yang akan mengeluarkan manusia dari kegelapan kepada cahaya yang terang benderang ….
Dan Bila ia telah melaksanakan haq Tuhannya, ia pergi berusaha di muka bumi, mencari keridaan Allah, dengan mengembangkan perniagaannya yang memberi laba, dan usaha-usaha lain yang membawa hasil. Thalhah r.a. adalah seorang Muslim yang terbanyak hartanya dan paling berkembang kekayaannya …. Semua harta bendanya dipergunakannya untuk berkhidmat kepada Agama Islam, yang benderanya dipanggulnya, bersama Rasulullah saw . . . . Dinafqahkannya hartanya tanpa batas . . . dan oleh sebab itu pula Allah menambahkan untuknya secara tak berhingga pula.
Rasulullah saw. memberinya gelar “Thalhah si Baik Hati atau “Thalhah si Pemurah” dan “Thalhah si Dermawan”, sebagai pujian atas kedermawanannya yang melimpah-limpah. Dan setiap kali ia mengeluarkan hartanya sebegitu banyak, maka ternyata Allah yang Maha Pemurah menggantinya berlipat ganda.
Istrinya Su’da bin Auf menceriterakan kepada kita, katanya: “Suatu hari saya menemukan Thalhah berdukacita, saya bertanya kepadanya: “Ada apa dengan kanda … ?”
Maka jawabnya: “Soal harta yang ada padaku ini semakin banyak juga, hingga menyusahkanku dan menyempitkanku . . !”
Kataku: “Tidak jadi soal, bagi-bagikan saja … !” Ia lalu berdiri memanggil orang banyak, kemudian membagi-bagikannya kepada mereka, hingga tidak ada yang tinggal lagi walau satu dirham pun. . . .
Di suatu saat setelah ia menjual sebidang tanah dengan harga yang tinggi, maka dilihatnya tumpukan harta, lalu mengalirlah air matanya, kemudian katanya: “Sungguh, Bila seseorang dibebani harta yang begini banyaknya dan tidak tahu apa yang akan terjadi, pasti akan mengganggu ketenteraman ibadah kepada Allah . . . !”
Kemudian dipanggilnya sebagian shahabatnya dan bersama-sama mereka membawa hartanya itu berkeliling melalui jalan-jalan kota Madinah dan rumah-rumahnya sambil membagi-bagikannya sampai Siang sehingga tak ada pula yang tinggal lagi walau satu dirham pun ….Jabir bin Abdullah menggambarkan pula kepemurahan Thalhah dengan berkata: “Tak pernah aku melihat seseorang yang lebih dermawan dengan memberikan hartanya yang banyak tanpa diminta lebih dulu, daripada Thalhah bin Ubaidillah …!” Ia adalah seorang yang paling banyak berbuat baik kepada keluarga dan kaum kerabatnya; ditanggungnya nafqah mereka semua sekalipun demikian banyaknya . . . .
Mengenai itu dikatakan orang tentang dirinya: “Tak seorang pun dari Bani Taira yang mempunyai tanggungan, melainkan dicukupinya perbelanjaan keluarganya. Dinikahkannya anak-anak yatim mereka, diberinya pekerjaan keluarga mereka dan dilunasinya hutang-hutang mereka …. !.
As-Sa’ib bin Zaia, lain pula ceriteranya tentang Thalhah: “Aku telah menemui Thalhah baik dalam perjalanan maupun waktu menetap, maka tak pernah kujumpai seseorang yang lebih merata kepemurahannya, baik mengenai uang atau makanan daripada Thalhah . . .!”Timbul fitnah yang terkanal dalam masa Khilafat Utsman r.a. Thalhah menyokong alasan mereka yang menentang Utsman dan membenarkan sebagian besar tuntutan mereka mengenai perubahan dan perbaikan …. Tetapi dengan pendirian itu, apakah ia mengajak orang membunuh Utsman atau ia merestuinya . . . ?
Oh, seandainya ia tahu bahwa fitnah itu akan berlarut-larut dan membawa kepada permusuhan dan saling menuduh serta menimbulkan dendam kebencian yang menyala-nyala hingga akhirnya jatuh qurban menemui ajalnya “Dzun Nurain” Utsman bin ‘Affan dalam peristiwa berdarah dan kejam itu ….
Kita katakan: “Seandainya ia mengetahui bahwa fitnah itu akan berakhir dengan pembunuhan seperti itu, pastilah ia akan menentangnya bersama shahabat-shahabat yang mula-mula menyokong, karena anggapan dan dugaan bahwa gerakan itu hanyalah sebagai gerakan perbaikan dan peringatan semata tidak lebih … !”Maka pendirian Thalhah ini berubah menjadi kemelut hidupnya, yakni sesudah terjadinya cara kekerasan dan kekejaman di mana Utsman dikepung lalu dibunuh orang ….Tak lama setelah Imam Ali menerima bai’at dari Kaum Muslimin di Madinah di antaranya Thalhah dan Zubair, keduanya telah meminta izin pergi melaksanakan ‘umrah ke Mekah.
Dari Mekah mereka menuju Bashrah dan di sana telah berhimpun banyak kekuatan yang hendak menuntutkan bela kematian Utsman …. “Waq’atul Jammal” atau peristiwa perang Berunta adalah perang, di mana bertempur dua pasukan, yang satu menuntut bela atas terbunuhnya Utsman dan yang lain pasukan pemerintah di bawah Khalifah Ali ….Adapun Imam Ali dalam memikirkan situasi sulit yang sedang melanda Agama Islam dan Kaum Muslimin, timbullah murung hatinya, melelehlah air matanya, dan terdengar isak tangianya . . .!!Ia telah dipaksa untuk bertindak keras.
Dalam kedudukannya selaku Khalifah Muslimin, tak ada jalan lain, dan tidak sepantasnya ia bersikap lunak terhadap pembangkangan atas pemerintahan, atau terhadap setiap pemberontakan bersenjata melawan Khalifah yang telah dikukuhkah syari’at.
Di kala ia bangkit untuk memadamkan pemberontakan semacam ini, maka ia selalu mencari jalan untuk menghindarkan tertumpahnya darah saudara-saudaranya, para shahabat dan teman-temannya, para pengikut Rasul yang seagama, yaitu mereka yang semenjak lama telah berperang bersamanya melawan tentara syirik, menerjuni pertempuran bahu-membahu di bawah bendera tauhid yang mempersatukan mereka sebagai satu keluarga, bahkan menjadikan mereka sebagai saudara kandung yang saling membela.Bencana apakah ini . . . ? Dan ujian sulit apa lagi yang lebih dari itu . . . ? Dalam mencari jalan ke luar dari bencana ini, dan untuk menjaga jangan sampai tertumpah darahnya Muslimin, Imam Ali selalu mempergunakan setiap cara yang dapat dipakai dan harapan yang dapat diandalkan.
Tetapi orang-orang yang dahulu pernah menjadi intrik-intrik Romawi dan kekaisaran Persi yang dahulu telah menemui kehancurannya di saat kejayaan Islam di bawah Khalifah Utsman nan bijaksana,dengan sikap munafik telah menyebar luaskan fitnah dan hasutan, maka kekalutan tambah menjadi-jadi. Ali menangis mengucurkan air mata sewaktu ia melihat Ummul Mu’minin Aisyiah dalam sekedup untanya, bertindak mengepalai balatentara yang hendak memeranginya . . . . Dan ketika dilihatnya pula Thalhah dan Zubair, pembela-pembela Rasulullah itu berada di tengah-tengah pasukan, Ali lalu memanggil Thalhah dan Zubair agar keduanya muncul menghadapnya; keduanya pun tampillah hingga leher kuda-kuda mereka bersentuhan,
Ali berkata kepada Thalhah:
“Hai Thalhah, pantaslah engkau membawa-membawa istri Rasulullah untuk berperang, sedangkan istrimu sendiri kau tinggalkan di rumah . . . !’
Kemudian katanya kepada Zubair:
“Hai Zubair, aku minta kau jawab karena Allah! Tidakkah engkau ingat, di suatu hari Rasulullah lewat di hadapanmu sedang ketika itu kita sedang berada di tempat Anu.
Beliau berkata kepadamu:
“Wahai Zubair, tidakkah engkau cinta kepada Ali. . . !’
Maka jawabmu:
“Masa kan aku tidak akan cinta kepada saudara sepupuku, anak bibi dan anak pamanku, serta orang yang satu Agama denganku . . . !’
Waktu itu beliau berkata lagi: “Hai Zubair demi Allah, bila engkau memeranginya, jelas engkau berlaku dhalim kepadanya . . . !”
Waktu itu berkatalah Zubair r.a.: “Yah, sekarang aku ingat, hampir aku melupakannya! Demi Allah aku tak akan memerangimu … !”Thalhah dan Zubair menarik diri dari perang saudara ini. Mereka menghentikan perlawanan, segera setelah mengetahui duduk persoalan, dan demi melihat Ammar bin Yasir berperang di fihak Ali. Mereka teringat akan sabda Rasulullah saw. kepada Ammar: “Yang akan membunuhmu ialah golongan orang durhaka . .. !”
Seandainya Ammar terbunuh dalam peperangan yang disertai Thalhah ini, tentulah ia termasuk golongan orang yang durhaka … !Thalhah dan Zubair mengundurkan diri dari peperangan, dan mereka terpaksa membayar harga pengunduran itu dengan nyawa mereka. Tetapi mereka beruntung dapat menemui Allah mereka dengan hati yang senang dan tenteram, disebabkan karunia yang telah dilimpahkan-Nya kepada mereka, berupa petunjuk dan fikiran yang benar ….Adapun Zubair ia telah diikuti seorang laki-laki bernama Amru bin Jarmuz yang membunuhnya di kala ia sedang lengah, yakni sewaktu ia sedang bershalat … ! Dan mengenai Thalhah, ia dipanah oleh Marwan bin Hakam yang menghabisi hayatnya….Peristiwa terbunuhnya Utsman telah mendatangkan keresahan pada jiwa Thalhah, hingga sebagaimana telah kami katakan dahulu menyebabkan kemelut hidupnya.
Padahal, ia tidaklah ikut dalam pembunuhan, tidak pula menghasut orang untuk membunuhnya, ia hanya membela orang yang menentang Utsman, di waktu belum ada tanda-tanda bahwa penentangan itu akan berlanjut dan berlarut-larut hingga berubah menjadi kejahatan atau tindak pidana yang kejam …Dan sewaktu ia ikut mengambil bagian dalam perang Jamal bersama pasukan yang menentang Ali bin Abi Thalib menuntut bela kematian Utsman, maka tujuannya dengan tindakan itu, ialah untuk menebus dosa yang akan membebaskannya dari tekanan bathinnya.
Sebelum memulai pertempuran, dengan suara yang tersekat oleh air mata, ia berdu’a dan merendahkan diri, katanya: “Ya Allah ambillah sekarang balasan kesalahanku terhadap Utsman hingga Engkau ridha kepadaku . . . . “. Maka tatkala ia ditemui Ali seperti yang telah kita ceriterakan, kata-kata Ali telah menerangi hatinya, sehingga bersama Zubair mereka melihat kebenaran lalu meninggalkan medan perang.Tetapi mati sebagai syahid telah disediakan untuk mereka ber dua! Benar . . . ! Mati syahid adalah hak Thalhah yang dikejarnya dan mengejar dirinya, di mana pun ia berada … karena bukanlah Rasulullah telah bersabda tentang hal ini:
“Inilah dia orang yang akan mengurbankan nyawanya!
Siapa yang ingin menyaksikan seorang syahid yang berjalan di muka bumi, maka lihatlah Thalhah … !”
Karena itulah ia menemukan syahid, tempat kembalinya yang agung dan yang telah ditentukan, dan dengan demikian berakhir pula perang Jamal . . . . Ummul Mu’minin Aisyiah menyadari bahwa ia telah tergesa-gesa dalam menghadapi persoalan itu, karena itu ditinggalkannya Bashrah menuju Baitul Haram dan terus ke Madinah, tak hendak campur tangan lagi dalam pertarungan itu. la dibekali oleh Imam Ali dalam perjalanannya dengan segala perbekalan dan diiringi penghormatan ….Sewaktu Ali meninjau orang-orang yang gugur sebagai syuhada di medan tempur, semua mereka dishalatkannya, baik yang bertempur di fihaknya maupun yang menentangnya.
Dan tatkala selesai memakamkan Thalhah dan Zubair, ia berdiri melepas keduanya dengan kata-kata indah dan mulia, yang disudahinya dengan kalimat-kalimat berikut ini:
“Sesungguhnya aku amat mengharapkan agar aku bersama Thalhah dan Zubair dan Utsman, termasuk di antara orangorang yang difirmankan Allah:
“Dan Kami cabut apa yang bersarang dalam dada mereka dari kebencian sebagai layaknya orang bersaudara, dan di atas pelaminan mereka bercengkerama berhadap- hadapan…. “
(Q.S. 15 al-Hijr: 47)
Kemudian disapunya makam mereka dengan pandangan kasih sayang, yang keluar dari hati bersih dan penuh belas kasih, seraya katanya:“Kedua telingaku ini telah mendengar sendiri sabda Rasulullah saw. Thalhah dan Zubair menjadi tetanggaku dalam surga…. “.

TALHAH IBN `UBAID ALLAH
The Falcon on the Day of Uhud
"Of the believers are men who have been true to their pledge to GOD, from them some have fulfilled their pledges, and some are still in hope of doing so, and they never change at heart" (33 : 23).
The Prophet (PBUH) recited this glorious verse and then turned to his Companions, pointed to Talhah and said, "Anyone who wants to please himself by looking at a man walking on the earth who has fulfilled his pledge of martyrdom Should look at Talhah."
The Prophet's Companions never wished nor did their hearts ever aspire and long for a better announcement than the one the Prophet (PBUH) directed to Talhah Ibn `Ubaid Allah. By such words he could feel Secure towards his destiny and fate. He was going to live and die as One of those who have been true to their pledge so that neither civil strife could affect him lassitude influence him, nor any kind of
The Prophet (PBUH) announced Paradise to him. How then was the life of Such a one who deserved this fine announcement?
He was trading in the land of Basraa, when he met One of the most virtuous monks there. He told him that a Prophet who was going to appear in the Sacred Land and whose appearance was prophesied by all virtuous prophets had risen and his era had already begun. Talhah was very much afraid to miss the procession of guidance, mercy, and Salvation.
When Talhah returned to his homeland Makkah after having spent months in Basraa and traveling around, he found a lot of talk taking place here and there. Whenever he met someone or a group of Makkah inhabitants they would talk to him about Muhammad the Trustworthy, about the angel sent down to him, about the mission he was carrying to the Arabs in particular and all people in general.
The first thing he asked about was Abu Bakr. He learned that Abu Bakr had returned with a caravan and trade not long ago and that he was standing at the side of Muhammad, believing in and defending him
Talhah said to himself, "Muhammad and Abu Bakr? By Allah, both of them would never join each other and agree upon falsehood. 1 Muhammad has already reached the age of 40. In all these years we've never heard him speak one single lie. Is it possible that he would now lie about Allah and say, `He sent me as a prophet and He sent me an angel'? It's something hard to believe."
He quickened his steps, directing them towards Abu Bakr's house. They did not talk for long because his long aspiration to meet the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and to swear to him the oath of allegiance was much faster than his heartbeats.
Abu Bakr accompanied him to the Prophet (PBUH) and he soon embraced Islam, joining there and then the blessed ranks!
That is how Talhah became one of the very early converts.
Despite his honorable rank among his clan, his vast wealth, and his successful trade, be had to taste his own portion of the Quraish's persecution. The task of torturing him and Abu Bakr was given to Nawfal Ibn Khuwailid, who was called The Lion of the Quraish. However, their persecution did not last long, as the Quraish soon felt ashamed and began to think about the consequences of their deeds.
Talhah emigrated to Al-Madiinah when the Prophet (PBUH) ordered the Muslims to emigrate. After that he experienced all the battles together with the Prophet (PBUH) except the Battle of Badr because the Prophet (PBUH) had sent him and Sa`iid Ibn Zaid on an assignment outside Al-Madiinah.
When they had fulfilled their task and were on their way back to Al Madiinah, the Prophet (PBUH) and his Companions were returning home after the battle. Talhah and his companion felt so sad and tormented for having missed the reward of joining the Prophet (PBUH) in his first jihaad battle.
However, the Prophet (PBUH) accorded them peace of mind when he informed them that their reward was exactly like the warrior's reward; moreover, he gave them a share of the booty exactly like the share he gave to each one who had fought the battle.
Then came the Battle of Uhud, when the Quraish, with all their might and tyranny, came to take blood revenge for the Day of Badr and to restore their dignity by defeating the Muslims once and for all, a defeat which was thought by the Quraish to be a simple matter and a predetermined fate. The fierce battle took place, and soon the battlefield was filled with its awful harvest: calamity overtook the polytheists.
Then when the Muslims saw them retreating, they laid down their weapons and the archers descended from their posts and began to collect their share of booty. Immediately and suddenly the Quraish army turned back to hold the field and tip the balance of the battle in their favor.
The fighting's ferocity, cruelty, and crushing resumed. The surprise attack had the effect of scattering the army.
Talhah saw that the side of the battlefield where the Prophet (PBUH) was standing had become the target of the polytheists' concentration. He immediately hurried towards the Prophet (PBUH).
He (May Allah be pleased with him) traversed a path, a long one, although it was in fact a short distance.
It was a path in which a single inch could not be traversed except by confronting tens of ferocious swords and tens of mad lances.
He could see from a far distance how the Prophet's (PBUH) cheek was bleeding and how he was silently suffering. It was then that Talhah got mad, leaped once or twice over the path of horror to reach the Prophet (PBUH), in front of whom he had to experience what he was afraid of: the swords of the polytheists drawn towards the Prophet (PBUH), surrounding him, wanting to get at him.
Talhah stood there like a raging army, striking with his sword to the left and right. He could see the Prophet (PBUH) bleeding and his pains becoming more and more unbearable. He helped him and carried him away from the hole where his foot had gotten stuck.
He supported the Prophet (PBUH) with his left hand and chest, backing up to a safe, secure place, while his right hand (May Allah bless his right hand) fought the swords of the polytheists who surrounded the Prophet and who swarmed the battlefield like locusts.
Let Abu Bakr As-siddiiq describe for us the whole scene of battle. `Aa'ishah once said: Whenever Abu Bakr recalled the Day of Uhud he used to say, It was the Tallaah's day. I was the first who approached the Prophet (PBUH). He said to me and to Abu Ubaidah lbn Al-Jarraah, "Watch out, for your brother." We looked at him, and we could see more than 70 stabs. His finger was cut off. We tried to remedy his condition.
In all the different events and battles, Talhah was always to be found in the forefront fighting in the cause of Allah, redeeming the Prophet's standard.
Talhah lived among the Muslim community, worshipping Allah with the worshipers, fighting in the cause of Allah with those who fought for truth, following the basic principles of the new religion which was revealed in order to bring people all people out of darkness into light.
After he fulfilled his duties towards Allah, he went on seeking the bounty of Allah, expanding and promoting his successful trade and business.
Talhah was one of the wealthiest Muslims. His whole fortune was put in the service of his religion, the standard of which he carried with the Prophet (PBUH). He spent it without measure, and so Allah increased it for him without measure.
The Prophet (PBUH) called him "Talhah the Excellent", " Talhah the Splendid and "Talhah the Generous" to demonstrate his bountiful generosity.
How often did he give his whole fortune away. Then Allah the Ever-Generous returned it to him
manifold! His wife Su'adaa Bint `Awf reported: Once I approached Talhah. I saw him worried and asked him, "What's the matter?" He said, "The money which I possess is now so abundant that it worries me and makes me feel distressed." I told him, "Never mind, I'll distribute it." He set out to call people and to divide it among them till there wasn't a single dirham left.
On another occasion, he sold his land for a very high price, and when he looked at the pile of money, his tears rolled down and he said, " A man in whose house all that money is to remain for a night and he doesn't know for sure what will happen to him is certainly deceived by Allah."
Then he called some of his companions to carry his money with them and walk through the streets of Al-Madiinah distributing it until in the last part of the night he was without a single dirham of that money.
Jaabir Ibn Abd Allah described his wealth saying, "I never saw anybody giving out so much money without being asked as did Talhah lbn Ubaid Allah."
He was one of the kindest toward his relatives and kin. He supported them all, though they were numerous. It was once said about him, "He never left an orphan without supporting him and his dependents. He provided for the marriage of the unmarried ones, he provided service for the disabled ones, and paid the debts of the indebted ones.
As-Saa'i'b Ibn Zaid once said, " I accompanied Talhah during travels and during times of settlement.
I never saw anybody more generous in terms of money, clothes, and food than Talhah."
The well known civil strife broke out during the caliphate of `Uthmaan. Talhah supported the argument of `Uthmaan's opponents, standing on their side in most of their quests to witness change and reformation.
Did he therefore, in such a position, call for `Uthmaan's murder, or even feel pleased by it? Never! If he had known that the civil strife would develop in such a way, bursting into mad spite, expressing itself in such cruel crime, the victim of which was "The Man of Two Lights" Uthmaan (May Allah be pleased with him)... We say, if he had known that the civil strife would in the long run lead to such an end and such a conflict, he would have resisted it, and it would have been resisted by the rest of the Companions who supported him at the beginning, recognizing it as a movement of opposition and warning, and no more.
However, Talhah's stance turned out to be his "life conflict" after the brutal way in which `Uthmaan was surrounded and killed. Imam `Aliy had hardly accepted the oath of allegiance from Talhah and Az- Zubair at Al-Madiinah, when they both asked permission to go to Makkah for `Umrah.
From Makkah they both turned to Al-Basrah, where a great multitude was gathering to avenge `Uthmaan's death.
At last it was the Battle of Al-Jamal, where those calling for revenge met with the party supporting `Aliy.
Whenever `Aliy thought about this difficult situation which Islam and Muslims were confronting in this horrible dispute, he burst into sorrowful tears and his laments grew louder and louder. He was forced into this difficult situation.
Being the Caliph of the Muslims, he could not and it was not his right to be tolerant towards any revolt against the state or any armed opposition to the established authority. To crush a rebellion of that sort, then, he had to face his brethren, his companions, friends and the followers of his Prophet and his religion, those with whom he had so often encountered and combated the polytheist armies and with whom he had so often joined under the standard of monotheism in battles that refined their Islamic behavior and melted away all weakness and disgrace, thereby turning them into brethren - and indeed brethren - supporting each other.
What a conflicting situation! What a difficult harsh test! In order to find a way out of such a conflict and to save the blood of the Muslims, Imam `Aliy did his utmost.
Nonetheless, the factors opposing Islam - and they were many -which had met their defeat at the hands of the Muslim state in the days of its great leader `Umar, had kindled the civil uprising and continued to stoke it and follow its events and magnitude.
He cried a lot and wept abundantly when he saw The Mother of the Faithful `Aa'ishah on her camel howdah at the head of the army which rose to fight him. When he saw Talhah and Az-Zubair, the disciples of the Prophet (PBUH), he called to them to come out to meet him, so they did. They approached him till their horses touched each other. He said to Talhah, "O Talhah! Did you come with the wife of the Messenger of Allah to use her in your fight while hiding your wife at home?" Then he said to Az-Zubair, "O Zubair! I ask you by Allah. Do you remember the day when the Prophet (PBUH) passed you when we were in such- and-such a place, then he said to you, `O Zubair! Do you love `Aliy?' You replied, `Why shouldn't I love my nephew and cousin and the follower of my religion? He said to you, "O Zubair! By Allah, you will fight him, being unjust to him. Az-Zubair (May Allah be pleased with him) said, "Yes, now I remember, I had forgotten that. By Allah, I won't fight you. Az-Zubair and Talhah abstained from taking part in this civil war. They abstained as soon as things were clarified. When they saw `Ammaar lbn Yaasir fighting on `Aliy's side, they remembered the Prophet's prophecy to `Ammaar: "You will be killed by the unjust party." If `Ammaar were killed in that war in which Talhah was taking part, then Talhah was unjust. Talhah and Az-Zubair retreated from the whole fight and had to pay for that retreat with their lives. But they met Allah pleased and delighted with what they had been endowed by Allah: insight and guidance.
As for Az-Zubair, a man named Amr lbn Jarmuuz followed him and killed him while he was praying.
As for Talhah he was pierced with a lance by Marwaan Ibn Al-Hakim , which killed him on the spot. The murder of `Uthmaan represented in Talhah's conscience his "life conflict", as previously mentioned. Despite the fact that, he did not take part in the murder nor agree to it, he had just supported the opposition against him (Aliy) at a time when it was not obvious that it would intensify and develop into a more serious conflict until it turned into a dreadful crime.
When he took his place on the day of Al-Jamal amidst the army fighting against the Ibn Abi Taalib which sought to take revenge for `Uthmaan's murder, he wished that his position would be an atonement making him feel at ease towards the pressure of his conscience. Before the start of the battle he was supplicating with a voice choked with tears saying,
"O my Lord, accept me this day in favor of `Uthmaan until You are pleased."
When they met `Aliy face to face, he and Az-Zubair both said they felt illuminated by `Aliy's words and thereby saw it to be right to leave the battlefield.
However, martyrdom had been reserved for them. Indeed, martyrdom was his fate, and he was to meet it and it was to meet him, wherever he was.
Did not the Prophet (PBUH) once say about him, "He's one of those who passed away. Whoever wants to please himself by seeing a martyr walking on the earth, go let him look at Talhah." Thereby did the martyr meet his inevitable fate, and the Battle of Al-Jamal was over. The Mother of the Believers realized that she had made a hasty decision; therefore she left Al-Basrah for the Sacred House and then Al-Madiinah, keeping aloof from the fighting and dispute. Imam `Aliy provided her with all means of comfort and respect.
When `Aliy inspected all the martyrs of the battle, he set out to pray the funeral prayer upon them, those who fought on his side as well as those who fought against him.
When he finished burying Talhah and Az-Zubair, he stood saluting them for the last time. He finished his words saying, "I wish to be with Talhah and Az-Zubair and `Uthmaan among those whom Allah described thus:
"We removed from their hearts any malice therein, as brothers they shall rest upon couches facing each other " (15: 47).
Then he gazed at their grave with kind, gentle, pure, and sad eyes saying, "I've heard with my two ears the Prophet (PBUH) saying, "Talhah and Az-Zubair are my neighbors in Paradise".
